About QuarryLoom
An independent educational reference on quarried stone materials, traditional masonry methods, and the buildings they produced across Canada.
What this is
A reference, not a directory
QuarryLoom began as a documentation effort — an attempt to collect reliable, source-referenced material on the stone types, quarry operations, and masonry practices that shaped Canada's built environment before the widespread adoption of concrete and steel framing.
The content focuses on the physical and historical record: which stones were quarried where, how they were cut and laid, what buildings they produced, and how those buildings are now maintained or, in some cases, lost. There is no commercial angle here. QuarryLoom does not sell stone, recommend contractors, or carry advertising.
Articles are written to be accurate and specific. Where a claim rests on a particular source — a conservation report, a geological survey, a historical society database — that source is cited directly. Where the available evidence is limited or contested, that limitation is noted.
Editorial approach
The subject matter — stone buildings, masonry techniques, quarry history — is specific enough that general information is often misleading. A statement that is true for Kingston limestone is frequently not true for Tyndall dolomite, and vice versa. QuarryLoom tries to maintain that specificity throughout.
Content is updated when better information becomes available. Update dates are shown on every article. Corrections are welcomed at editorial@quarryloom.org and acted on promptly when supported by credible sources.
